Maggi Hambling (born Suffolk 1945) is a distinguished painter and sculptor whose work can be seen in the British Museum, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Collection and many other public collections in the U.K. and abroad.  Her sculpture of Oscar Wilde was unveiled in Adelaide Street, London WC1, in 1998.
Crest of a Wave is one of her series of North Sea Paintings which began in November 2002 during the preparation of her sculpture Scallop which was unveiled on Aldeburgh beach a year later.  The exhibition The Sea - paintings by L S Lowry and Maggi Hambling will open at The Lowry in Salford next October.
"My grandfather, at Sheppards Farm, Tunstall, always had Suffolk Punches and so these were the first working horses I encountered as a child.  Thereafter other breeds paled into insignificance beside such ancient, chunky, chesnut splendour.  I salute the vital work of the Trust at Hollesley Bay which ensures that our native Suffolk animals are rightly celebrated and perpetuated."

This silent auction is taking place in June and July 2009. All proceeds will be given to the Suffolk Punch Trust.    The Suffolk Punch Trust was set up in 2003 as a registered Company and No: 1100596). By 2006 the Trust had raised the money to buy 180 acres of land, the Suffolk horses at the stud and the oldest registered flock of Suffolk sheep in the world. The aims of the Trust are the preservation of rare breeds of animal for the benefit of the public, in particular the Suffolk punch breed of horse to advance the education of the public regarding the agricultural and natural heritage of the County of Suffolk to promote the rehabilitation and re-settlement of offenders and ex-offenders in the County of Suffolk and to provide, in the interests of social welfare, a public open space for the use of the inhabitants of the County of Suffolk and surrounding areas. The Trust will use the farm and the horses and other animals for the benefit of people and their education. Already the Trust is having visits by children from inner city and other areas who are introduced to the countryside to see rural life which they would otherwise never experience. Building work has now commenced on the Visitors Heritage Centre which will be open next year.
Crest of a Wave can be seen in the window of Fournel Jewellers 122-124 High Street, Aldeburgh IP15 5AB during June and July.
